William Whipple, Jr. (born January 14, 1730 in Kittery , Province of Massachusetts Bay , colony of the Kingdom of Great Britain , today USA ; † November 28, 1785 in New Hampshire , USA) was a signatory of the United States' Declaration of Independence and thus one of the founding fathers of the USA .

William Whipple attended a general school until he went to sea before he was 15. He became a ship master at the age of 21. In 1759 he landed in Portsmouth (New Hampshire) and became a trader with his brother. In 1775 he was elected to represent his city in the provincial parliament. In 1776 New Hampshire dissolved the royal administration and reorganized itself with a House of Representatives and an Executive Council. Whipple became a council member and security committee member and was elected to the Continental Congress, where he served until 1779 . In 1777 he became Brigadier General of the New Hampshire Militia and took part in the successful campaign against John Burgoyne at the Battle of Stillwater and the Battle of Saratoga . After the American Revolutionary War , he became a sub-judge at the New Hampshire Supreme Court. He suffered from a heart condition and died on the way to the courtroom when he passed out from his horse.
