The Williams River is a 53-kilometer left tributary of the Gauley River in Pocahontas County and Webster County in the US state of West Virginia . It drains a 332 km² sparsely populated area in the southern Allegheny Mountains and parts of the Allegheny Plateau . It flows through the southwestern part of the Monongahela National Forest and the Cranberry Wilderness .
The river is one of the top five trout fishing waters in West Virginia.

The Williams River is formed by the confluence of the Beaverdam Run and Downy Run eight kilometers west of Marlinton and initially flows northwestwards to the confluence of the Black Mountain Run , where it takes a northeast course. After the confluence of Big Laurel Creek , the river turns again and now flows mainly to the northwest, passes the Highland Scenic Highway and flows three kilometers southeast of Cowen into the Gauley River. The most important tributary is the Middle Fork Williams River .
Names
The origin of the name is not certain. According to one report, the name comes from William Ewing, a Revolutionary War veteran who lived near Buckeye and owned land on the upper reaches of the river.
