Willibald Cernko (born July 7, 1956 in Knittelfeld ) is an Austrian bank manager and has been Chief Risk Officer of Erste Group since January 1, 2017 .

Life

Willibald Cernko grew up with four siblings in Rothenthurm, today part of the Sankt Peter ob Judenburg community , completed the HAK high school diploma and began studying at the Export Academy of the Vienna University of Economics and Business , which he did not graduate.

Willibald Cernko began his professional career in 1983 at the Raiffeisenkasse Obdach -Weißkirchen. In 1985 he moved to Vienna and worked for Creditanstalt AG, one of the predecessor banks of today's Bank Austria; initially in the corporate customer division, of which he was deputy head from 1996 to 1998. In 2000 he became head of corporate banking at Bank Austria AG. In 2002 he took over the position of divisional director for the CEE business area at the merged Bank Austria Creditanstalt AG. Since 2003, Cernko has been a member of the Board of Management of Bank Austria Creditanstalt AG, and since 2006 he has also been a member of the Board of Management of HypoVereinsbank AG for private and business customers. From January 2009 to September 2009 he also held the post of Executive Vice President of the UniCredit Group and was Head of Retail Germany & Austria.

Cernko took over the post of CEO of UniCredit Bank Austria AG on October 1, 2009 from Erich Hampel , who held this position from 2004 to 2009. Cernko was replaced in this role by Robert Zadrazil on March 1, 2016 .

Willibald Cernko has been Chief Risk Officer of Erste Group since January 1, 2017 . As of June 1, 2017, his department will also be responsible for the Group Sustainability Office, with the primary goal of integrating sustainability as well as diversity and inclusion into the corporate culture of Erste Group as an integral part.

Personal

Cernko is married to the Serbian born Jasminka Stancul , a pianist, for the second time , and has four children, including Leonard Cernko , who was voted “Chef of the Year” by Gault Millau Austria in 2006.
