Willibald Heilmann

Willibald Heilmann (born March  9, 1928 in Offenbach ; †  April 30, 2006 ) was a German classical philologist and professor of didactics in classical language teaching.

Life

After graduating from high school, Heilmann studied Classical Philology , Classical Archeology , Philosophy and German Studies in Bamberg and Frankfurt am Main from 1947 to 1952 , where he then took up a position as a grammar school teacher for Latin and Greek at the Heinrich von Gagern grammar school . At the same time Heilmann published numerous essays on didactic problems and considerations in classical language teaching . In 1959 he was at Erwin Wolff with a study on the importance of Venus in Tibull Dr. phil. PhD. In 1964 he left school and took up a position as an academic advisor at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt . In 1973 he completed his habilitation and received the professorship for Classical Philology with a focus on didactics of ancient languages . In this activity, Heilmann closely combined research and teaching. In addition to Virgil , Martial , Ennius , Cicero and Tacitus , his research areas also included the Latin poetry of the Middle Ages.

In the subject didactic discussions of the grammar school curricula of the 1970s, Heilmann emerged as one of the first classical philologists to combine the didactics of ancient languages ​​with methods of modern linguistics and to create a new form of text grammar. The textbooks for Latin ( Contextus ) and Greek ( Lexis ) written by Heilmann, which intended to overcome the strict separation between language and reading lessons, became groundbreaking for subsequent teaching works. In addition, Heilmann worked for the didactic journal Der Altsprachliche Studium (AU) as an author and advisor to the editorial team for over thirty years .

Willibald Heilmann died on April 30, 2006 at the age of 78 after a long illness.
