Willy Knoop (born March 7, 1888 in Lütjenburg ; † March 16, 1966 in Hamburg-Wellingsbüttel ) was a German painter and an honorary citizen of his hometown.

Life

Willy Knoop was self-taught as a figurative painter. Between the wars in Hamburg he worked as a watercolorist, but also in oil, in large formats and in boisterous colors. Knoop was part of the Hamburg Secession and associated there with Erich Hartmann , Willem Grimm , Karl Kluth and Fritz Kronenberg . National Socialism not only brought the end of secession, but also in 1937 Knoop was removed from the list of visual artists and an exhibition ban. An attempt to emigrate to Yugoslavia followed, and in 1938 he moved to Vienna, where he married his Hamburg student Margret Knoop-Schellbach (1913-2004). After the Second World War, both returned to Lütjenburg in 1946 and initially lived in Hohwacht . His wife worked as an art teacher in Kiel for twenty years from 1952, after having previously contributed to the living as a puppeteer for two years. Willy Knoop was buried on April 2, 1966 in the Lütjenburg cemetery.

Vollmer mentions exhibitions for Knoop in the Kunsthalle Bremen , the Kieler Kunsthalle and on the Museumberg Flensburg .
