Begonia bowerae grows as a perennial , herbaceous plant and is one of the low- growing , rhizome-forming species of begonia with heights of about 25 to 30 centimeters . The protruding hairs (trichomes) on the above-ground parts of the plant led to the common name "eyelash begonia". The asymmetrically shaped leaves are about 8 centimeters wide.

The eyelash begonia is single sexed ( monoecious ); so it bears both male and female flowers . In the leaf axils the long spring Blütenstandsschäfte characterized project beyond the doldigen inflorescences the leaves. The relatively small, unisexual flowers are white. Male flowers have two bracts and stamens . The female flowers have a subordinate, triple ovary .

Systematics, distribution and botanical history

The Begonia bowerae occurs only in the Mexican state of Oaxaca. On March 13, 1948, it was discovered by Thomas MacDougall in the Mexican state of Oaxaca at an altitude of about 1220 meters on the foothills of the Sierra Madre on the Cerro Atravesado north of Niltepec along a flowing water and with the collective number Thomas MacDougall C.62 in the Missouri Botanical Garden's Herbarium (MO) deposited.

The first description of Begonia bowerae in 1950 Rudolf Christian Ziesenhenne in Begonian , Volume 17, page 78, there it was written "boweri". The specific epithet bowerae honors the committed begonia lover Constance Bower.

Begonia bowerae belongs within the genus Begonia to the section Gireoudia .

In 1973 four varieties were described by Rudolf Christian Ziesenhenne in Begonian , Volume 40, Issue 12, p. 288:

  • Begonia bowerae Ziesenh. var. bowerae
  • Begonia bowerae var. Major Ziesenh.
  • Begonia bowerae var. Nigramarga Ziesenh. (the type material is TBMacDougall C.177)
  • Begonia bowerae var. Roseiflora Ziesenh.
