Wincenty Jakub Dunin-Marcinkiewicz (born February 4, 1808 in Paniuszkiewicze , † December 29, 1884 in Mała Lucynka ) was a Polish - Belarusian writer, stage poet of Polish Romanticism and political activist. He is considered the founder of modern Belarusian literature.

biography

Dunin-Marcinkiewicz belonged to the Polish-Lithuanian noble family Łabędź from the region around Babrujsk . From 1824 to 1827 he studied medicine after passing secondary school at the University of Saint Petersburg , but did not graduate.

From 1827 on, Dunin-Marcinkiewicz lived and worked in Minsk as a civil servant. In 1840 he bought a mansion near Iwianiec , where he built his own theater and wrote most of his works, which he wrote alternately in Polish and Belarusian . A year later he founded the first Belarusian theater group and encouraged numerous schools in the region to set up theater groups as well. He mainly wrote verses about rural life and the relationship between the impoverished population and the large landowners. In 1846 he published with Sielanka ( Eng . Idylle ) his most famous Singspiel, which was performed in 1852 to music by Stanisław Moniuszko .

In 1859 he translated the Polish national epic Pan Tadeusz by the poet Adam Mickiewicz into Belarusian. However, after its publication in Vilnius , Lithuania , its work was confiscated by the Russian occupation forces . Its translation was the first to be made into another Slavic language .

Russian authorities made him responsible for the January uprising in Poland in 1863 , whereupon he was interned. After the rebels were put down, he was released, but from then on he was under constant surveillance by the police. His daughter Kamila, who was actively involved in the January uprising, was admitted to a psychiatric ward by the authorities by court ruling .

Dunin-Marcinkiewicz is the ancestor of the Polish blogger Barbara Czarnowieska .
