The Winckelmann Medal is awarded by the German Archaeological Institute (DAI).

The Winckelmann Medal was donated and awarded for the first time in 1929 on the occasion of the DAI's centenary birthday by its honorary member Johann II von Liechtenstein . The award is given at irregular intervals to institutions that have made lasting contributions to archeology . So far, the medal has been awarded ten times - generally for anniversaries of the DAI:

Only Crown Prince Gustav Adolf received the medal as a person, all other medals went to institutions. The medal was designed by the sculptor Edwin Scharff and shows on the front Johann Joachim Winckelmann's bust in profile and on the back the Hyperborean griffin , the symbol of the DAI.
