Winselsburg

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Winselsburg is a legendary place near the Upper Franconian town of Rehau , which was probably a former margravial hunting lodge .

Today it is a relatively large, diamond-shaped forest section in the Rehau Forest . The forest area is in the east of Rehau, north of the Höllbach, near the Czech border. Different rows of boundary stones indicate former property boundaries. A stream widens into a swamp-like area interspersed with a few small islands. With pings and heaps, the section contains traces of earlier excavation.

According to legend, the Winselsburg is a castle that sank in the swamp during a storm. Hikers should be able to hear the whining of former residents and their dogs. Excavations are said to have brought to light the bell of the castle tower.

The importance of Winselsburg as a historical place is emphasized in many older chronicles about the Rehau area. According to this, a dog kennel of the Kulmbach-Bayreuth margraves is said to have stood there, surrounded by a ditch , which is said to have been nicknamed "Winselsburg" by the population in relation to dog ownership. If there were other rooms there, one could speak of a very simple hunting lodge. The property is said to have caught fire from lightning and was not rebuilt. The area name Winselsburg was already used in 1502 in Hof's land register . Margrave Georg Friedrich is said to have hunted more often in the area. Around 1601/1602, wolf hunts took place to contain damage.
