The mountain lies on the watershed between the river systems of the Wupper and the Heilenbecke . The streams Fastenbecke , Brambecke and Schwelme arise on its flanks . The mountain is the highest point in Schwelm and there is a water reservoir on the summit .

Two medieval old streets crossed on the mountain , the Heerweg Cologne – Dortmund and a branch of the Frankfurt – Elberfelder Straße. From the latter, ravines have been preserved on the summit. The routes of the old roads are now largely used by the state road L527 and the federal road 483 . A settlement has formed at the intersection, which also bears the name Winterberg.
