Winterlieb ( Chimaphila ) is a genus of plants from the heather family (Ericaceae). It comprises five species, one of which is also native to Central Europe.

description

Chimaphila are dwarf shrubs that grow from rhizomes . Its leaves appear to be whirling , leathery and serrated. The inflorescence is an umbrella grape (Corymbus). Pre-leaves are missing, the bracts support the flower stalk.

The petals are not grown. The stamens are thin. The stylus is short, with a sleeve at its outer end. The pollen grains form tetrads, monads or polyads. The number of chromosomes is n = 13.

distribution

The genus is found in the northern hemisphere in the boreal zone and the middle latitudes, but extends to Guatemala and Hispaniola in the south .

Systematics

The genus was first described in 1814 by Frederick Traugott Pursh . It is the tribes of the subfamily of Pyroleae Monotropoideae from the family of heather plants assigned (Ericaceae) and includes five species, including:

  • Pipsissewa ( Chimaphila umbellata (L.) WPCBarton )
  • Chimaphila japonica Miq. : It occurs in Bhutan, Japan, Korea, Russia (Sakhalin), Taiwan and China.
  • Chimaphila monticola Andres : It occurs in two subspecies in Sichuan and Taiwan.
