The Groß-Umstädter Winzerfest in the city of Groß-Umstadt , also known as the Odenwälder Winzerfest , is one of the major wine festivals in the Hessische Bergstrasse wine-growing region and the largest festival on the Odenwälder Weininsel . The wine festival traditionally takes place on the weekend after September 15th. If this day falls on a weekend, the festival takes place on that weekend.

history

The Roman grape stones in the town church of Groß-Umstadt

A Roman "grape stone" documents viticulture, which has been documented since the year 775. A copy of the grape stone is in the museum and cultural center of Groß-Umstadt , where the history of viticulture is illustrated. Market rights have been documented for Groß-Umstadt since 985 , there has been a cattle market since 1810. The forerunners of the Odenwälder Winzerfest were finally the Umstädter Markt , which was celebrated since 1835, and the "horse, foal, carnival and breeding cattle market" that resulted from it. which was colloquially called Gailsmäärd .

An urban wine tasting , which was introduced to the market in 1935, was the cornerstone for the winegrowers festival. The first wine festival took place in 1937. In the first year, a wine village with tents was designed on the market square. The first parades were held in 1937 and 1938 and then again from 1949.

After the end of the Second World War , the Umstädter Markt revived in 1946 in connection with the Odenwälder Winzerfest. The rider on horseback , locally known as a farmer's rider or affectionately known as the Schockelgäulchens , who still adorns the posters of the winegrowers' festival as a logo , was first seen on a pageant in 1949, designed by the Darmstadt draftsman Hartmut Pfeil during his time between 1944 and 1949 when he was in Darmstadt bombed out, found accommodation in Umstadt. Traditionally, the farmer riders still lead the winegrowers' parade today.

In 1989 the first farmers 'market of the Darmstadt-Dieburg district farmers' association was held on Georg-August-Zinn-Straße, until 1994 always on the Saturday of the wine festival. Since 1995, the farmers' market has been held one week before the wine festival on the historic market square of the Odenwald wine island , as Groß-Umstadt proudly calls itself. It has officially been part of the preliminary program of the wine festival since 2000.

The official counting of the wine festival did not start until 1946, so that in 2016 the 70th wine festival was celebrated in Groß-Umstadt, although in 2012 already 75 years of the wine festival were celebrated.

The central location of the wine festival is the historic market square and the alleys of the old town around it. The festival begins with a public wine tasting on the Saturday before the festival. The week leading up to the festival is characterized by numerous smaller events. These include the farmers' market described, the wine festival run in the Klein-Umstadt district and the unofficial opening on Wednesday evening in the city's wine cellars, which used to be the wine bar in the cellars of the Wambolt castle .

The festival will officially open on Friday evening. On Saturday the wine queen and her princesses will be crowned in the town hall , the mayors and wine sovereigns of the twin towns will be presented and later presented to the "people" on the market square. Sunday afternoon is dedicated to the big parade, which usually has around 100 car numbers. The festival ends on Monday with the traditional morning pint and a performance by the local band Los Veteranos in the evening; fireworks have recently crowned the end of the festival. The festival is musically accompanied by several bands on outdoor stages around the market square, in front of the Palatinate Castle and the Wambolt's Castle.

Since 2006, the wine festival has been accompanied by an event radio, Radio Wein-Welle , which broadcasts on 88.9 MHz and can be received within a radius of about 30 km.

In addition to the wine grown in Groß-Umstadt, only the wine from the partner communities in Saint-Péray and Santo Tirso is served . The serving takes place only in the official current wine festival glass. This holds 0.1 l and is issued every year with a new Umstädter motif, most recently in an edition of 35,000 pieces. The vintner festival glass is usually worn by the vintner festival visitors in a special holder around their necks. It serves as an admission ticket and has become a collector's item thanks to the annually changing motif . While it was handed in for € 1 up to 2010, it was € 2 in the following year and € 2.50 for the first time in 2017.
