Shortly after Wirich was born, his mother died. At his father's request, his uncle, Count Wirich VI, took over . von Daun-Falkenstein took over the guardianship of him and his siblings Philipp Wilhelm and Amena Walburg from 1586. They were brought up in the faith of the Reformation at Broich Castle . On July 3, 1597, the uncle, as guardian of Philipp Wilhelm and Wirich, was enfeoffed with the castle and rule of Hardenberg by Duke Johann Wilhelm von Jülich-Kleve-Berg .
