Vyacheslav Jurjewitsch Jakowlew ( Russian Вячеслав Юрьевич Яковлев ; born June 24, 1960 in Leningrad ) is a former Soviet boxer . He won a total of three medals at world and European championships in super heavyweight .

Career

Vyacheslav Yakovlev began boxing as a teenager and started for Burewestnik Leningrad , but during his career he also belonged to an army sports club at times. His trainer was Alexander Simin. He fought as an adult with a height of 1.96 meters from 1981 always in the super heavyweight. He usually weighed around 100 kg. In total, he fought almost 250 fights in his amateur career. After his career as an amateur boxer, he completed four professional fights in Japan in 1990 , of which he won three and lost one.

In 1980 he started as a twenty-year-old for the first time in the Soviet senior championship, but lost in the round of 16 against the more experienced Pyotr Sajew on points. In the "absolute champion" which was still taking place at that time, in which the best Soviet boxers in the three heaviest weight classes were allowed to compete, he was much more successful in the same year and fought his way to the final with victories over Sergei Solkin, Nikolai Timkin and Jonas Siliavicius , in which he lost to Alexander Jagubkin on points. In 1980 he already got his first international merits, because he won the super heavyweight competition at the boxing tournament in London , which was held to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the English Boxing Association, defeating Werner Kohnert from the GDR and Gyula Alvics from Hungary each on points.

In 1981 Vyacheslav Yakovlev won the super heavyweight title at the Soviet championships. In the final he came thereby to a point victory over Alexander Krasko. In the same year he also won the determination of the "absolute master", for which he needed four wins and defeated Viktor Morschnew in the final battle. After he had also won the European Championship elimination tournament in Riga , he was used at the European Championship in Tampere . He won there on points over Teodor Pirjol, Romania and Azis Salihu from Yugoslavia , but lost in the final to the Italian Francesco Damiano, who dominated the international super heavyweight boxing event together with Teófilo Stevenson from Cuba, on points (0: 5 judges' votes) and thus became Vice European Champion .

In 1982 he was unable to compete in the Soviet championship due to injury. But he won the elimination tournament for the World Cup in Tallinn , but in his place was used in this Valery Abajyan . At the end of 1982, when the "absolute champion" was determined, he lost in the final against Valery Abajyan on points. In 1983 Vyacheslav Yakovlev defeated such strong boxers as Alexander Miroshnichenko and Alexander Lukstin at the Soviet championship . In the final, however, he lost again against Valery Abajyan on points and also in the end of 1982 the determination of the "absolute master" he lost in the final against Valery Abajyan on points.

In the following years, Vyacheslav Jakowlew never again succeeded in becoming a Soviet champion. He lost the following fights: 1984 in the final against Valeri Abajyan, 1985 in the quarterfinals against Valeri Absdschjan, 1986 in the semifinals against Alexander Miroshnichenko, 1987 in the semifinals against Alexander Jagubkin , in 1988 in the final against Alexander Miroshnichenko and in 1989 in the semifinals again against Alexander Miroshnichenko.

In 1985 he competed at the European Championships in Budapest , where he defeated Dorin Racaru from Romania on points and came to a victory over Janusz Zarenkiewics from Poland without a fight . In the final battle he was defeated by the outgrown Hungary Ferenc Somodi on points (1: 4) and therefore had to be content with the runner-up European title. In October 1985 he achieved great success at the championship of the armies of the Warsaw Pact countries (SKDA championship) in Bydgoszcz . He won there in the semifinals over Teófilo Stevenson on points (5-0) and defeated his compatriot Andrei Aulow in the final battle. After all, in November he also won the super heavyweight division of the World Cup in Seoul . He beat Hyun Man-baik from South Korea by breaking off in the 2nd round and Isaac Barrientos from Puerto Rico and Lennox Lewis , Canada , the future professional boxing world champion, each clearly on points (5-0 judges' votes).

In 1986 he competed at the World Championships in Reno in May. He came there to a victory over Janusz Zarenkiewics, but this time lost to Teofilo Stevenson in the semifinals just on points (1: 4 judges' votes). He won a World Cup bronze medal with it. He achieved another notable tournament victory in July 1986 when he won the super heavyweight division of the so-called "Goodwill Games" in Moscow . He defeated it Valery Abajian, George Kilbert Pierce from the United States and Alexander Miroshnichenko on points.

1987 Vyacheslav Jakowlew was also at the "Intercup" in Hemsbach at the start, but lost there in the quarterfinals against Janusz Zarenkiewics on points. At the 1987 World Cup in Belgrade , he won over Chris Ondera from Kenya on points and lost in the final against Ulli Kaden from East Germany on points.
