Vladimir Alexandrowitsch Popowkin ( Russian Владимир Александрович Поповкин ; born September 25, 1957 in Stalinabad (after 1961 again Dushanbe), † June 18, 2014 in Israel ) was a Russian general .

Life

In 1975 he joined the Soviet Army , of which he was an active member until 2009. Over the years he rose to the ranks of the military and became a general. From 2004 to 2008 he was the successor to Anatoly Nikolajewitsch Perminow Commander in Chief of the Russian Armed Forces . Oleg Nikolayevich Ostapenko succeeded him in office . From June 21, 2010 to April 29, 2011, he was First Deputy Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation. As of April 29, 2011, Popovkin was the successor to Anatoly Nikolayevich Perminov, General Director of Roscosmos . He was replaced here by Oleg Ostapenko in October 2013 .

Popovkin was married twice and had two children. He died on June 18, 2014 in an Israeli hospital where he was being treated for cancer .
