Wladimir Borissowitsch Stockmann

Wladimir Borissowitsch Stockmann ( Russian Владимир Борисович Штокман ; * 1909 in Moscow , † 1968 ibid) was a Russian oceanographer .

Life

Stockmann, the son of a mechanical engineer , began studying at Moscow University (MGU) in 1929 in the mathematics department of the physical- mathematical faculty . When the Moscow State Institute for Hydrometeorology (MGMI) was formed from the university , Stockmann continued his studies there.

From 1930 Stockmann worked first as an intern and then as a research assistant at the Moscow State Institute of Oceanology . As leader of an expedition, he carried out investigations in Motowski Bay . In 1934 he was sent to Baku to organize and then head the Laboratory for Physical Oceanology at the Azerbaijani Branch of the All Union Institute for Fisheries Economics and Oceanography (WNIRO). For the systematic investigation of the Caspian Sea , he introduced new methods for obtaining reliable data for statistical evaluations using probability theory . From this later the principles of the polygon methodology for marine studies developed.

In 1938 Stockmann was transferred back to Moscow to head the hydrology department at WNIRO . In 1939 he was brought to the Department of Marine Physics of the Institute for Theoretical Physics of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (AN-SSSR, since 1991 Russian Academy of Sciences (RAN)) headed by Otto Juljewitsch Schmidt . At the beginning of the German-Soviet War he was evacuated to Krasnoyarsk , where he worked in the Arctic Research Institute (ANII). In 1943 he moved to the AN-SSSR's Oceanological Laboratory, evacuated to Krasnoyarsk, which in 1946 became the AN-SSSR's Institute of Oceanology (IOAN, now the Shirschow Institute for Oceanology) of the AN-SSSR in Moscow. In 1944 he received his doctorate in physical-mathematical sciences . In 1947 he was appointed professor . He headed the Department of Physical Oceanology and then the Laboratory of Marine Dynamics . With his investigations he was able to explain the reasons for the intensification of currents on the western coasts for the Gulf Stream and the Kuroshio . By taking into account the soil relief and the uneven wind conditions, he explained the anomalous currents in the Aral Sea . His diverse work led to the establishment of further laboratories. Rostislav Vsevolodowitsch Osmidow and Mikhail Nikolajewitsch Koschljakow belonged to his students .

The research ship of the Schirschow Institute for Oceanology bears Stockmann's name, as does the Russian Stockmann natural gas field in the southern Barents Sea .
