Wladimir Iossifowitsch Kaplunow ( Russian Владимир Иосифович Каплунов ; born March 2, 1933 ) is a former Soviet weightlifter .

Career

Vladimir Kaplunov from Kazan started lifting weights at the age of 18. He made good progress, especially when he joined the Soviet Army and found good training conditions there. At first, however, other lifters dominated the scene in the USSR, so that he could not draw attention to himself for the first time at the Russian team championships in 1960 when he was 27 when he reached 382.5 kg in the lightweight. That was 2.5 kg more than the silver medalist had achieved at the Olympic Games in Rome that same year . From then on he was among the world's best and was used for the first time in 1962 at world championships. In the next few years he fought great fights with the Polish top lifters Waldemar Baszanowski and Marian Zieliński . At the national level, Viktor Buschuyev and Sergei Lopatin were its main competitors. After completing his active career in 1968, after having failed to qualify for the Olympic Games that year, he became a successful coach in the Soviet Weightlifting Association.
