The old people's home was built on behalf of the City of Magdeburg by the United Building Administration / Building Department of the City of Magdeburg. City planning officer Julius Götsch was in charge of management . The designs came from the Magdeburg architects Lippsmeier und Dietrich. The architecture of the complex is considered to be of high quality and in the tradition of Expressionism , with elements of the homeland style also echoing. The planning for the home was already completed in 1936, but delays meant that construction work continued until 1942.

An ensemble of seven residential buildings and an administration building was created. Three of the residential buildings as well as the administrative building run along the Fermersleber Weg and Leipziger Strasse as peripheral development, with the administrative building being particularly dominant. It is set back at the intersection so that a small green area extends in front of it. The other buildings are facing the courtyard. The houses are designed as three-story brick buildings. They are covered by high hip roofs. There are striking stepped gables and large roof houses.

The front of the administration building is designed with a large stepped gable , which is decorated with a grid-like structure and into which very small square windows are integrated. In front of it is a smaller biaxial bay window, which also has a similarly designed but smaller stepped gable. On the long side there are four very high three-part hall windows, which are provided with a simple artificial stone surround. There are small stepped gables above the windows. The access to the administration building is in the corner of the building and is marked by a small porch supported by pillars.

The central part of the longitudinal building along Fermersleber Weg has four uniaxial, box-shaped risalits , which are also provided with small stepped gables. On the side facing away from the street, the middle part is designed as a wide risalit. There is also a stepped gable on the western front.

The facade facing Leipziger Strasse has extended shop windows on the ground floor. The premises are intended for shops and restaurants.

The residential buildings facing the courtyard are connected on their narrow north side by a long, roofed but otherwise open connecting passage. The buildings have balconies supported by pillars, some of which were laid out as corner balconies. Some balconies are placed in front of the facade, some integrated into it.

The windows are flush with the building facade. There are wide brick friezes made of German tape under the eaves .

At the time of construction, the houses were provided with single and double rooms. The Otto Kobin Hall, named after the musician Otto Kobin who worked in Magdeburg, is located in the administration building . The hall is covered with a wooden ceiling and has a gallery on its west side . In addition, located in the hall of a Gustav Steinmann created organ in the style of neo-baroque . The hall serves as a venue for cultural events, especially concerts. It is also used as a conference venue for political gatherings. In 2015 and 2016, for example, it was the venue for state party conferences of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen Sachsen-Anhalt , which decided on their state list for the state elections in Saxony-Anhalt in 2016 and also their approval of the coalition agreement for the so-called Kenya coalition .

In the local register of monuments , the old people's home is listed as a monument under registration number 094 16812 .
