The Wolayerseehütte (formerly Eduard-Pichl hut ) is a mountain hut of the Alpine Club Austria the PES in the Carinthian Alps main ridge .
location
The hut is located directly on Lake Wolayer , in the middle of the Carnic Main Alpine Ridge in the southern Limestone Alps . This is about 6 km west of the Plöckenpass and only a few meters from the Austrian-Italian border. It is the base of the Austrian Southern Alps Long Distance Hiking Trail and the Carnic High Trail .
history
Built in 1896 by the Obergailtal section, the hut was opened on August 10, 1897. In 1909 it was taken over by the Austria Section for financial reasons. During the First World War , the cirque around the hut and lake was a theater of war, which is still reminiscent of the remains of positions and a war memorial . The hut, which was destroyed during the fighting, was rebuilt in 1922–23 and, now named after the then chairman of the Austria Section, Eduard Pichl , opened on August 4th and 5th, 1923 respectively.
Despite his great achievements and services to alpinism, a sign of distancing himself from Eduard Pichl was set. Since he was an active National Socialist and, as an anti-Semite, already enforced the Aryan paragraph in the Alpine Association in 1924 , the hut was given its original name again in 2002: Wolayerseehütte.
