The Südalpenweg (also Südalpiner Weitwanderweg or Weitwanderweg 03 ) is a long-distance hiking trail in Austria from Bad Radkersburg to Sillian , an alternative end point is Arnbach . His route runs through the federal states of Styria , Carinthia and (East) Tyrol , and in some places Slovenian and Italian territory is also entered.

It was opened in 1981, and it takes around three and a half weeks to hike the 500 km long path.

course

From Bad Radkersburg the route leads west, following more or less the course of the Mur , to Mureck and Spielfeld . From there you can hike on two routes to Leutschach and on to the Remschniggalm. The path to the Kapunerhütte and the Radlpass runs on the ridge of the Poßruck . Now on to Laaken, at the Jantschkifels you enter the federal state of Carinthia before you descend from the Hühnerkogel to Lavamünd .

The route runs from Bleiburg to the Feistritzer Spitze , the first Karawanken summit and at the same time the first two-thousand- meter peak along the way. After a long descent, Bad Eisenkappel is reached, where the ascent to the Eisenkappler hut is tackled. The summit of the Hochobir can be climbed, but is not directly on the way. Below the Koschuta you hike to Zell-Pfarre , further over the Jauernik to the village of Waidisch, which belongs to Ferlach .

Via the Ferlacher Horn one reaches the Bodental , the Stinzesteig brings hikers to the Klagenfurter Hütte . After Rosenbach, you hike via the Maria Elend pilgrimage church, unless you choose the side route via the Kahlkogelhütte ( Koča na Golici ) in Slovenia. The Mittagskogel (Karawanken) can optionally be climbed from the Bertahütte , then it goes past Altfinkenstein to the Wurzenpass and over the border triangle Austria-Slovenia-Italy to Thörl-Maglern .

Now the Carnic Main Ridge is followed in parallel with the Carnic High Trail . The route leads over the Feistritzer Alm and Egger Alm to Nassfeld , below the Trogkofel to the Zollnersee hut . After crossing the Plöckenpass road , the Wolayerseehütte is reached. Now mainly via Italian territory to the Hochweißsteinhaus . Those who shy away from the following high-alpine route along the border ridge to the Porzehütte , which is already in East Tyrol , can take a simpler variant over the Italian pastures.

Pass under the Große Kinigat to the Obstansersee hut and from there to the last base on the way, the Sillianer hut . From there you only need to descend to the end of the Südalpenweg in Sillian or, alternatively, in neighboring Arnbach.

The last section from Nassfeld to Arnbach is also part of the European long-distance hiking trail E10 .
