Woldemar Freiherr von Löwendal

Woldemar Freiherr von Löwendal , born as Ulrik Frederik Valdemar baron Løvendal , (born September 25, 1660 , †  June 24, 1740 in Dresden ) was a Danish - Norwegian nobleman, electoral Saxon court marshal and cabinet minister . From 1710 to 1712 he was the Danish governor in Norway .

Life

Löwendal was born in 1660 as the son of the Danish count Ulrik Fredrik Gyldenløve and Sophie Urne, daughter of a Danish court marshal. Gyldenløve was an illegitimate son of the Danish King Frederick III. and Margrethe Pape, who came from a middle-class family and was later promoted to Baroness von Löwendal .

Löwendal first served the Dutch and then entered the imperial service. He then entered the service of Denmark, where he served as a dragoon brigadier in 1700 in the Duchy of Holstein . Löwendal finally became a businessman in Hamburg, where he married Dorothea von Brockdorff, a cousin of Countess Anna Constantia von Cosel .

After the early death of his wife in 1706, Löwendal finally came to Dresden, where he soon rose to the highest offices under the influence of Countess Cosel. In 1707 Löwendal entered the service of the Saxon Elector Augustus the Strong and became chamber president and chief mine director in the secret cabinet created in 1706 . After a visit by the Danish King Friedrich IV in Dresden, August von Sachsen awarded Löwendal to the Danish crown in 1710. Löwendal became the Danish governor and commander of the Danish troops in Norway . A year later he was awarded the Elephant Order for the services he acquired in this function , which is still the highest Danish order of merit. He succeeded his father in these functions, who was Danish governor in Norway from 1664 to 1699 and Commander-in-Chief of the Norwegian Armed Forces in 1666.

After Löwendal returned to the Saxon court in 1712, he was appointed by the elector to the chief court marshal and real privy councilor. In 1717 he was appointed cabinet minister. In 1721 Löwendal was awarded the Polish White Eagle Order.

Löwendal died in Dresden on June 24, 1740. He was buried next to his four children, who died young, in the Löwendal crypt, which is located under the former stately box on the north side of the Nikolaikirche in Bockwitz . In 1776 his second wife Benedicta Margareta was also buried here.

Possessions

East side of the Elster Castle in Elsterwerda

Shortly after Löwendal came to Saxony, in 1708 he acquired the rule of Elsterwerda . At the castle, in which the Elsterschlossgymnasium is currently located, he had large parts of the four-wing complex demolished and a three-wing complex with short side wings open to the east was created. Löwendal later got into financial difficulties and on March 20, 1727 he had to sell the property, including Krauschütz and Kotschka , to King August the Strong for 10,500 thalers.

In 1716 the Mückenberg and Saathain estates were acquired . Mückenberg soon became the residence of his wife Benedicta and their four children who died early. Von Löwendal transferred the rule with the six associated villages to her hereditary property to his wife and in 1722 she received it as a state fief. Due to the rich iron stone deposits discovered in the area, she founded the Lauchhammerwerk in 1725 and became one of the first entrepreneurs in Lower Lusatia and founder of today's industrial site.

In addition, von Löwendal still owned properties in Holldorf.

Family and offspring

From the marriage with Dorothea von Brockdorff (1672–1706), half-sister of Cai Lorenz von Brockdorff (1646–1725), closed on February 16, 1687, the future general and marshal of France Ulrich Friedrich Woldemar Graf von Löwendal emerged in 1700 .

On January 29, 1709 Löwendal married Benedicta Margaretha von Rantzau . With the later Baroness von Löwendal, Löwendal had the children of Augustus Baron von Löwendal, Anna Sophie Baroness von Löwendal, Friedericus August Baron von Löwendal and Margarethe Adelheid Benedicte Baroness von Löwendal. However, all four offspring died in childhood.
