Wolf Blechschmidt was an important master builder in Pirna in Saxony ( Saxon Switzerland ) in the 16th century . He was probably born around 1510 , lived in Pirna from around 1541 to 1560 and died in Annaberg in 1560 .

Blechschmidthaus

From 1544 to 1563 he lived in the so-called Blechschmidthaus (Niedere Burgstrasse 1) in Pirna, which he rebuilt in 1544 using older components from the 13th century. The house has a volute gable on the side facing the church square, a Wendelstein in the courtyard, a Renaissance beamed ceiling on the 1st floor, a richly decorated niche portal from the late Renaissance with a portrait of Blechschmidt as a bas-relief above the entrance in Niederen Burgstrasse and with a Master's stonemason mark. In 1979 the Blechschmidt relief was replaced by a copy. The original is in the hotel's Renaissance hall.

The house has been a three-star hotel since 1996 (romantic hotel "Deutsches Haus").

Activity as a builder

Blechschmidt's activity as a master builder is documented on various vaulted ceilings in the church, in the town hall and in Pirna town houses. He has built or contributed to several structures in Pirna, especially the following:

  • Blechschmidt completed the St. Mary's Church in Pirna , built between 1502 and 1546 ,
  • He rebuilt the town hall in Pirna in the Renaissance style in 1555–1556
  • the house "Am Markt 12" was probably built around 1548.

From 1558 he also built the late Gothic town church of St. Marien in Marienberg , which was only completed after his death and inaugurated in 1564 . It is the youngest of the three Erzgebirge hall churches . Blechschmidt's late Gothic rib vault is still preserved in the tower halls . A special feature is the Renaissance - transverse arches .
