Otto S. Wolfbeis

Otto S. Wolfbeis (born July 18, 1947 in Graz ) was professor for analytical chemistry and interface chemistry at the University of Regensburg .

biography

Wolfbeis studied chemistry at the University of Graz and received his doctorate in organic chemistry in 1972. He then worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Radiation Chemistry in Mülheim near Koerner von Gustorf. From 1974 he was an assistant at the Institute for Organic Chemistry at the University of Graz. After another stay as a visiting scientist at the Technical University of Berlin with Ernst Lippert (1978), it completed its habilitation in 1979 with a thesis on the synthesis and spectroscopic properties of laser dyes and fluorescent indicators . He was then visiting professor at Tufts University (Boston, 1986), Hebrew University of Jerusalem (1995) and Wuhan University (China, 1997). From 1991 to 1994 he was the founding director of the Institute for Optical Sensorics at the Joanneum Research Association in Graz, which later became part of the Institute for Surface Technologies and Photonics . In 1994 he received offers at the universities of Paderborn and Regensburg and accepted the latter. From 1995, as director, he converted the existing institute for physical chemistry into an institute for analytical chemistry, chemical and biosensors .

Scientific activities (selection)

Wolfbeis was at the University of Regensburg several times a member of the university's senate and head of the laboratory for environmental radioactivity (1998–2012). He was also dean of the Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy (2000–2002) and prorector (2002–2004) as well as Regensburg's representative at the Bavarian Elite Academy (2004–2008). He initiated the founding of the Fraunhofer group for optical sensors in Regensburg (today part of the Fraunhofer facility for microsystems and solid-state technologies in Munich).

Wolfbeis was among other things founder of the conference series Methods & Applications in Fluorescence (MAF, 1989). In 1992 he organized the first Europtrode conference, which deals with optical methods in chemo- and biosensors. He was chairman of the conference series Permanent Steering Committees (1991–2009) and in 1996 co-founder of the ASCOS course (Advanced Study Course on Optical Sensors).

Wolfbeis has published over 500 publications in peer-reviewed journals and is the inventor of around 40 patents.
