Wolfgang Backé

Wolfgang Backé (born July 25, 1929 in Kidifu , Tanzania ; † July 21, 2016 in Aachen ) was a German mechanical engineer and university professor.

Career

Backé was the son of a German coffee plantation owner in Tanzania and returned to Germany with his parents towards the end of the Second World War . After graduating from high school, he studied mechanical engineering at RWTH Aachen University, specializing in manufacturing technology, and received his doctorate in 1959 under Herwart Opitz at the WZL machine tool laboratory there . In 1962 the habilitation followed, also in Aachen, with a topic from fluid technology . From 1968 he was a full professor for hydraulic and pneumatic drives at RWTH Aachen University, where he was the first director of the institute for fluid power drives and controls . Backé was dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and editor of professional journals. In 1994 he retired. Four days before his 87th birthday, he died of complications from a serious illness, leaving behind his wife, four children and seven grandchildren.

Wolfgang Backé held 50 national and international patents in the field of fluid technology. In addition, he was the founder of the Fördervereinigung Fluidtechnik e. V. , which promotes young scientists and organizes international colloquia.
