Wolfgang Birkenfeld

Wolfgang Birkenfeld (born September 7, 1932 in Nordhausen ; † September 2011 ) was a German historian and university professor .

Life

Birkenfeld, who also worked as a teacher for a while, taught, after having previously worked in Braunschweig (from 1962 at the Pedagogical University) and Duisburg , at the University of Siegen from 1972 . There he taught Modern History and History Didactics until 1997, the year he retired . In the meantime he also held the function of dean of Faculty I ( social sciences , philosophy , theology , history , geography ).

Birkenfeld was one of the most important textbook authors in Germany. Among other things, he worked on the series The Journey into the Past . This history book was published in millions of copies and translated into Japanese. He was also the editor of the Westermann History Atlas .
