Wolfgang Bobeth (born February 15, 1918 in Löbau ; † April 2, 1996 in Dresden ) was a German textile technician .

Life

Bobeth came as the son of the student councilor Dr.-phil. Johannes Bobeth and his wife Charlotte geb. Türk in Löbau to the world. After passing the matriculation examination at the German High School Löbau in February 1937 and after completing his labor service, he studied mechanical engineering at the Technical University of Wroclaw from the interim semester in 1937. After the preliminary examination, he mainly devoted himself to studying textiles at the Technical Universities of Aachen and Dresden. At the beginning of February 1941 he graduated from the chair for fiber science at the Institute for Textile and Paper Technology at the Technical University of Dresden , headed by Paul-August Koch , where he then became an assistant. Bobeth also completed his dissertation there on the subject of “elasticity testing on the running thread and on the piece of thread” and in May 1943 was awarded a Dr.-Ing. PhD. Bobeth worked on a secret research assignment from the Reich Office for Economic Development . The dissertation also contains an appendix on “Application of the experience gained to investigations on glass silk and rayon cords (in the context of two research projects that are important for the war effort)”, which “out of consideration for the necessary secrecy is not included in the deposit copies.” In 1941 he joined the NSDAP at.

After the end of the Second World War , Bobeth worked at the Römer dye works from 1945 (later Löbauer piece dye works and weaving mill) and from 1949 at the VVB Weberei II in Bautzen. In 1950 he became a research assistant in the textile testing department of the German Academy of Sciences in Berlin (in Pirna-Copitz and Dresden) and rose to head of department in 1952. Also from 1950 he taught as a lecturer for fiber microscopic examinations at the TH Dresden. From 1955 Bobeth was a research assistant in the Ministry of Light Industry of the GDR and qualified as a professor in 1956 with the thesis Contributions to the improvement of textile fiberglass products at the TH Dresden. In 1957 he was appointed as the successor to Walter Frenzel as professor for textile raw materials and textile testing at the TH Dresden (from 1960 professor with chair). In 1960 he also became dean of the Faculty of Technology at the TH Dresden and director of the Institute for Textile Technology; he held this position until 1968.

After the 3rd university reform, Bobeth was a full professor of textile technology from 1968 to 1971; his successor was Harald Perner (1927-2001). Between 1971 and 1988 Bobeth was an honorary professor for textile technology in the processing and process engineering section of the TU Dresden. As the successor to Walter Frenzel, Bobeth also worked from 1959 to 1981 as director of the Institute for Technology of Fibers at the German Academy of Sciences in Berlin.

From 1962 to 1984 Bobeth was a member of the Research Council of the GDR and from 1967 a member of the German Academy of Sciences (class for mathematics, physics and technology). For his "scientific achievements in the field of testing fiber materials, in particular glass fiber materials, which led to a systematic design of use value and a significant increase in the quality and use of local fiber materials", Bobeth was awarded the National Prize of the GDR III in 1964 . Excellent for science and technology . He was made a Fellow of the Royal Textile Institute of Great Britain in 1969 and was made an honorary member of the Association of Polish Textile Experts in 1989.
