Wolfgang Dittrich (Librarian)

Wolfgang Dittrich (born May 23, 1938 in Breslau ) is a German librarian , former director of the Lower Saxony State Library and chairman of the Association of German Librarians .

Life

Born in 1938 in Breslau, Wolfgang Dittrich attended elementary and high school in Grevesmühlen in Mecklenburg, moved to Berlin in 1956 and studied history and German at the Free University of Berlin and at the University of Bonn from 1958 to 1966 . In 1967 he joined the library service, initially at the Berlin State Library of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation . In 1971 he was promoted to Dr. phil. PhD.

From 1979 Dittrich worked as the deputy head of the Herzog August Library in Wolfenbüttel as an employee of Paul Raabe and head of the library department, before he took over the management of the Lower Saxony State Library in Hanover from 1986 to 2002 .

During the 16 years of his tenure in Hanover, Wolfgang Dittrich, together with his deputies Hinrich Vollers and Eberhard Bartsch, “among other things, completed the expansion of the six humanities and social science departmental libraries at the University of Hanover ,” fully equipped and integrated the state library with EDP ​​systems that were state-of-the- art at the time the data sets and their availability "in the Lower Saxony network system". At the same time, Dittrich increased the library holdings by half a million units, while at the same time the loan volume multiplied. During his tenure as director of the Lower Saxony State Library, Wolfgang Dittrich initiated numerous exhibitions and lectures and presented the contents of the Leibniz Archives, a special department of the house.

Wolfgang Dittrich was a board member of the Lower Saxony State Association of the German Library Association, he was a member of the Lower Saxony Advisory Board for Library Affairs and was elected chairman of the Association of German Librarians (VDB) from 1999–2001. For many years he headed the working group of regional libraries and worked for nine years on the DBI commission for "Manuscripts and the Old Book". He was also a member of a number of literary societies.

Wolfgang Dittrich was valued for his humor and "his communicative nature". The passionate book collector is a member of the Hanoverian Masonic lodge Die Ceder and archived "an important collection of Masonic literature in the State Library".
