Wolfgang Eckert (born April 28, 1935 in Meerane ) is a German writer .

Life

Wolfgang Eckert's father was an appreteur , weaver and transport worker . The mother was a spinner, preparatory worker and warper in the weaving mill. Eckert attended the Meeraner Tännicht School as a primary school student from 1941 to 1949. Until 1952 he attended the Meeraner weaving school with a degree as a woolen fabric maker. From 1952 to 1958 he was a preparatory worker and primarily a hand weaver in the mechanical weaving mill of Ernst Dressel in Meerane . Until 1960 he worked as a preparatory worker and hand weaver in the Meeraner VEB "Palla".

From 1960 to 1963 he completed a university course at the Institute for Literature "Johannes R. Becher" in Leipzig. He then returned to the VEB "Palla" as head of the union library. He worked there part-time and devoted himself to his writing activities in his free time. During his time as head of the library, he founded the VEB “Palla” literature club. There he introduced authors of world literature, the GDR and the FRG and invited writers to readings. His successor, the librarian Helga Döbler, continued to run the club. He continued to oversee the program until the literary club was dissolved in 1989.

From 1964 to 1990 he was the artistic supervisor of the circle of writers of the Kulturbund of the Glauchau district. This circle received a gold medal twice at the workers' festival in Neustrelitz and Magdeburg. The writer Hans Brinkmann emerged from the circle . In 1990 the circle broke up.

In 1970 the Stasi led him for a short time as an unofficial employee . According to his autobiography I was a spy , he refused to work and has been monitored by the Stasi ever since.

Eckert joined the SED after the events in Chile in 1973, with the deaths of Salvador Allende and Pablo Neruda . From 1976 to 1981 he was a member of the district assembly for the Karl-Marx-Stadt district . There he was active in the commission for art and culture and represented the writers' association of the Karl-Marx-Stadt district. In 1978/79 and 1981/82 he attended two special courses at the Leipzig Institute of Literature.

In the 1980s Eckert founded the literature club of the VEB Meßgerätewerk Zwönitz in the Ore Mountains, which he ran together with the librarian Ilona Holley until it was dissolved in 1989.

Before the fall of the Wall in 1989 , he asked to acknowledge the declaration he had submitted in 1988 to leave the SED, which then happened accordingly. He has not belonged to any party since then.

From 1989 to 1992 he was an editor at Meeraner Blatt , after which he was unemployed for a short time and from 1992 to 1993 adviser to the Saxon state parliament member Joachim Schindler ( SPD ). Eckert has been working as a writer again since 1993.

Eckert is married and has one son.

From 1970 to 2016 Eckert wrote two television plays, a play, two novels, short stories, feature articles, stories, aphorisms, autobiographies, a biography and poems as a freelance writer. He has also contributed to 24 anthologies and articles for numerous newspapers. Eckert's narrative style ranges from humorous, ironic-satirical, politically biting to serious tones. Primarily he turns to the present and takes the view that literature should interfere, i.e. be contentious. He names Erich Kästner as one of his role models in posture and writing . His birthplace and hometown Meerane provide the background in many of his works.
