Wolfgang Eichel

Wolfgang Eichel (born August 13, 1910 in Thorn ; † May 16, 1989 ) was a German sports historian and university professor .

Life

Eichel studied German, foreign languages ​​and physical education in Berlin , Königsberg and Greifswald . In 1948 he was appointed director of the sports institute at the University of Greifswald and in 1949 a lecturer, he taught in the subjects of sociology, aesthetics, psychologist of physical exercise and methodology of physical education. from May to September 1949 he was also chairman of the HSG University of Greifswald sports club. During his time in Greifswald he was also involved in the district sports committee. Eichel published writings on swimming lessons and on assessing performance in school gymnastics, as well as poems and novels outside of sport, launched two literary magazines and published scientific essays on style theory during the genius period.

In October 1950 Eichel took over the management of the Institute for Physical Education and School Hygiene at the Humboldt University in Berlin . In 1954 he completed his doctoral thesis on the development of modern Olympism there, making him the first person to do a doctorate at this institute.

In 1958 he moved to the German University for Physical Culture (DHfK) in Leipzig and became head of the Institute for the History of Physical Culture. Thanks to a special regulation, he completed his habilitation at the DHfK before the university was granted the right to habilitation in October 1965. The subject of his work was "From the 'General German Gymnastics Federation' to the 'German Gymnastics Association': a decisive turning point in the history of German physical culture (1849–1871)”.

At DHfK he dealt with the history of gymnastics and sports festivals in the GDR , the history of physical culture as a sports science discipline, history propaganda as the task of sports historians, sports of the working class, Lenin and sports, sports in antiquity and of the person Pierre de Coubertin. In the 1980s and the beginning of the 1990s, he published the textbook "The History of Physical Culture in Basics" in several editions.

From 1960 to 1989 Eichel was Vice President of the Society for the Promotion of the Olympic Thought in the GDR . He was also a member of the GDR's NOK .
