Wolfgang Engelhardt

Wolfgang Engelhardt (born October 12, 1922 in Munich ; † May 1, 2006 ) was a German biologist and conservationist.

Career

Engelhardt studied zoology, botany, geography and chemistry at the Technical University of Munich and at the Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich (LMU). In 1949 he received his doctorate under Hans Krieg , followed by his habilitation in December 1963.

From 1951 to 1982 he was a lecturer for nature conservation and later landscape ecology at the Technical University of Munich. In 1972 he was appointed honorary professor at the LMU Munich.

From 1947 to 1967 he worked at the Zoological State Collection in Munich, most recently as senior curator and head of the department for invertebrates. On June 1, 1967, he was appointed General Director of the Bavarian State Natural Science Collections . During his term of office the new building of the Zoological State Collection and the opening of the Museum Mensch und Natur fall . He retired on April 30, 1991.

From 1951 to 1962 he was honorary managing director of the German Nature Conservation Association , from 1964 to 1968 Vice President and from 1968 to 2000 its President.

In the discussion about the political status of nature conservation, he publicly criticized the decision-making processes in society and made suggestions to restrict democratic decision-making.
