Wolfgang Gorter (born June 23, 1908 in Munich , † November 21, 1989 in Bad Tölz ) was a German mountain pioneer and filmmaker.

Life

Wolfgang Gorter was born as the son of Richard and Valerie Gorter (1885-1962) in Munich and died on at the age of 81 in Bad Tölz. He was the father of a biological son (* 1932) and two adoptive sons whom his wife Wilma-Thea Gorter brought into the marriage.

His filmmaking dates back to the 1930s and he was the first German to receive permission from the occupying powers to make films and to show them in public after the Second World War . His films and television programs were always made with great personal commitment. "They managed Gorter with films like 'Franzl intervenes' to keep people in the battered Germany again the mountains in the broken halls." Gorter is considered extreme mountaineer , in addition to their own expeditions, including in Afghanistan's Hindu Kush and polar film expeditions to Northern Arctic Ocean .

In the 1920s he met Luis Trenker and became his friend and temporary employee. Gorter has been a mountain, ski and cultural film cameraman and director since 1936. Together with Ludwig Steinauer from Munich, he was able to carry out many first ascents in 1936 . The highlights were the first ascent of the Alam Kouh north face (the route is now called “The German Ridge”) and the crossing of the Damavand . Two years later he managed the first ascent of the North Face of Damavand, a 3000 meter high snow and ice flank. To date he has received around 25 international awards. At the age of almost 70 he accompanied the Iranian-Japanese Himalayan expedition to the 8156 m high Manaslu as a cameraman without an oxygen device . ( Quote from Hans Strobel )
