Wolfgang Krolow (born April 6, 1950 in Sippersfeld ; † September 24, 2019 in Berlin ) was a German photographer .

Life

As the son of a couple from Hanseatic and Palatinate, Wolfgang Krolow spent an independent childhood in the country. As a teenager he occasionally performed in Kaiserslautern with the blues harp in front of GIs in American clubs. Foregoing high school diploma and military service, he set out for India in the Middle East in 1968, traveling to Turkey, Syria, Iraq, Iran and Afghanistan. Due to physical and mental exhaustion, however, he broke off the trip without having reached India. In 1969, Krolow successfully applied to the art academy in Mannheim, where he studied sculpture and graphic design with Professor Hans Nagel . At about the same time he began photography and also gained his first experience in the darkroom . He moved to Berlin in 1970 and worked as a plasterer in construction, as a warehouse worker and in a printing company. In 1972 he successfully applied to the Berlin University of the Arts (HDK). He did not begin his studies in visual communication with a focus on photography and graphic design there until 1975 with Professor Helmut Lortz . From 1977 he worked as a freelancer for various daily newspapers, magazines and publishers such as Suhrkamp and Wagenbach . After completing his studies in visual communication at the HDK, Krolow worked as a freelance photographer in the fields of journalism, actor portraits and architecture from 1982. From the late 1980s onwards, Krolow began taking more photos while traveling and portrayed in film and theater.

His early travel experiences, and not least the acquaintance with his fellow photographer Gerhard Vormwald , inspired him to work with the camera for many years. His photographs from numerous European cities, countries and places such as Albania or Volgograd were published in many daily newspapers and magazines - but the center of his work was and remained the Kreuzberg neighborhood , which is also reflected in Krolow's publications. Until his death he lived there himself for many years on Chamissoplatz.

In 2005 Wolfgang Krolow suffered a stroke and was then permanently dependent on a wheelchair. He died in a Berlin hospital at the age of 69.

Trivia

  • In 2005, according to Vita, Krolow was allegedly hit by a "lightning strike" - but this may mean his stroke.
  • In connection with a series of arson attacks, a car burned out in front of Krolow's ground floor apartment in Berlin's Kreuzberg district at night in July 2019. The flames hit the windows of his apartment. Krolow was able to alert his supervisor in time and thus be brought to safety - the Berliner Zeitung BZ reported on it.
