Wolfgang Richter (philologist)

Karl Wolfgang Richter (born May 27, 1935 in Coswig ) is a German classical philologist .

Life

Wolfgang Richter studied Classical Philology and Classical Archeology at the University of Rostock . He then became a scientific assistant to the archaeologist Gottfried von Lücken . For 40 years he taught Latin , ancient Greek and the history of medicine at the University of Rostock . His doctorate, which he received in 1971, was also devoted to a topic that Richter remained connected to in the following decades, namely the Latin education of medical students. The subject of the dissertation was a model of a subject-integrated special language education and training process for medical students in Latin . This Rostock model , which combined language lessons with anatomical exercises, was received beyond the borders of the German-speaking area. In 1998 he was made an honorary professor.

Richter deals with the history of medicine and the history of classical studies. He has written a biography about Heinrich Schliemann and sits on the board of trustees of the Winckelmann Society , which awarded him the Winckelmann Medal in 1983 .
