Wolfgang Seiler (born January 22, 1940 in Remscheid ) is a German biogeochemist and climate researcher .

Career

Seiler studied meteorology from 1961 to 1969 at the University of Mainz and graduated with a diploma. In 1970 he also received his doctorate there in meteorology (Dr. rer. Nat.). Ten years later he completed his habilitation at the ETH Zurich in the field of air chemistry . From 1980 to 1982 he also had a teaching position at the ETH Zurich. From 1980 to 1989 he was visiting professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology , Atlanta, USA and from 1989 to 1990 Research Professor of Environmental Sciences at the University of Virginia , Charlotteville, USA.

Seiler worked as a research assistant at the Institute for Meteorology at the University of Mainz (1969–1985) and was simultaneously a scientist and head of the "Trace Gases" working group at the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry (MPI), Mainz (1978). This was followed by a research stay at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), Boulder, USA, where he researched together with Paul J. Crutzen .

From 1986 to 2001, Seiler was director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Atmospheric Environmental Research and from 2001 to September 2007 director of the Institute for Meteorology and Climate Research (IMK-IFU) at the Karlsruhe Research Center (now the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology ). In 1998 he was appointed honorary professor at the University of Augsburg .

Seiler was the initiator of the Bavarian climate research association BayFORKLIM from 1990 to 1999 and the spiritual father of the environmental research station Schneefernerhaus .

Seiler co-founded biogeochemistry in Germany and, according to Thomson Reuters Highly Cited Research, is one of the frequently cited authors in the field of geosciences .
