Wolfgang Streit

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wolfgang R. Streit (* 1964 ) is a German microbiologist and professor at the University of Hamburg .

Life

Wolfgang Streit completed a degree in biology at the Philipps University of Marburg until 1989 , where he was also awarded a doctorate in 1993 for his work on the microbiology of rhizobia . In 1994 he worked as a postdoc at the Philipps University of Marburg and from 1995 to 1997 he was a postdoc at the University of California, Davis (USA) . Between 1997 and 1998, he conducted research at the University of Bielefeld and launched in connection to 2004, a working group at the Georg-August University Göttingen , Institute of Microbiology and Genetics, where he in July 2002 in microbiology at Wolfgang Liebl habilitated . From 2004 to 2006 he was professor for enzyme technology at the University of Duisburg-Essen in the chemistry department. Since 2006, Wolfgang Streit has been professor of the Department of Microbiology and Biotechnology at the University of Hamburg in the Department of Biology.

Wolfgang Streit and his working group pursue several research priorities. He researches metagenomics and the utilization of previously uncultivated microorganisms for biotechnology as well as the identification of new enzymes and valuable biomolecules . These include, for example, lipases , glycosyl transferases and also enzymes for plastic degradation. On the other hand, the group is researching the molecular processes that lead to the formation of microbial biofilms in order to derive strategies to inhibit biofilm growth. In addition, Wolfgang Streit's team is interested in bacterial cell-cell communication and topics in biotechnology.

Streit is a member of the Association for General and Applied Microbiology , DECHEMA , American Society for Microbiology and Hamburg School of Food Science. He is co-editor of the journals Applied Environmental Microbiology, Frontiers of Microbiology and Journal of Molecular Biotechnology and was co-editor of RÖMPP online (2009-2015). He is the coordinator of the EraNet networks “MetaCat” and “MarBioTech”.
