Wolfgang Streitenberger

Wolfgang Rüdiger Streitenberger (born January 2, 1952 in Vienna ) is a former official of the European Commission in Brussels. He is an Austrian citizen and worked for the Commission until his retirement in February 2017 as a senior adviser to the Directorate-General for Regional Policy and Urban Development .

Life

He studied at the University of Vienna and the Sorbonne Paris, completed his double degree in 1974 with a master's degree in economics and in 1975 with a doctorate in political science. In 1975/76 he completed post-graduate studies in European economics at the Collège d'Europe in Bruges, Belgium.

From 1976 to 1980 Streitenberger worked as an economic researcher in the economics office of Creditanstalt-Bankverein , at that time Austria's largest bank. 1981 to 1984 he was the business editor of television on ORF , Austrian radio and television in Vienna. From 1985 to 1989 he held a staff position in the general director of the ORF and was responsible for media policy and corporate planning. In 1990 he moved to the EXPO VIENNA AG Vienna World Exhibition Society, which was preparing the planned Vienna-Budapest World Exhibition, where he was head of public relations and press spokesman. Even before this project was rejected by the population in 1991 in a referendum in Vienna, Wolfgang Streitenberger moved to the Lower Austrian state capital planning company in St. Pölten, which drove the state capital development and built the administrative and cultural buildings. He was on the board of this company until the end of 1994 and was responsible for advertising, marketing, public relations and innovation.

In 1996 Streitenberger was appointed an official of the EU Commission and was entrusted with the position of Head of the Representation of the European Commission in Austria, which he held until the end of 2001. In accordance with the regular rotation, he was transferred to the EU Commission in Brussels and appointed as Conseiller Adviser to the Directorate-General for Communication. From 2003 to 2010 he was Conseiller-Senior Adviser to the Director General of the Information Society and Media Directorate-General , which deals in particular with the promotion of research and innovation in the field of information and communication technology. 2011–2017 he was Conseiller-Senior Adviser of the Directorate-General for Regional Policy and Urban Development .

From 1981 to 1984, Wolfgang Streitenberger was television journalist in Bild as well as in the business magazine Schilling with numerous reports, especially in the areas of banking and finance, international business and development aid. From 1987 to 1994 Streitenberger also acted regularly as the presenter of the one-hour TV discussion program Nachtstudio , where he was responsible for the topics of economics, history, political science, sociology and psychology. He has also published in various business journals (A3-Volt, Economy). From 1991 to 1994 he was editor-in-chief of the quarterly newspaper Stadt im Land . In his function as head of the EU Commission Representation in Austria, he was the publisher and editor-in-chief of the monthly magazine EU-Direkt and the quarterly magazine Die Union for many years .

As a part-time job, Streitenberger regularly worked as a lecturer, for example at the Advertising Academy in Vienna from 1995 to 1996 and at the Business Development Institute (Wifi) St. Pölten and Linz. From 1999–2008, he held an annual doctoral seminar on EU policies and institutions at the Institute for Political Science at the University of Vienna. From 2007 to 2011 he was lecturer for European integration at the Hogeschool Universiteit Brussel . From 2010 - 2017 he was a lecturer for Public Diplomacy at the International School for Protocol and Diplomacy in Brussels.

Streitenberger was and is internationally active as a speaker, 2003-2010 mainly on EU policies for research and development, information and communication technology. In 2011–2016, he mainly explained EU regional policy in around 20 speeches per year. Since his retirement, Streitenberger has taken on advisory assignments in the field of EU policies and EU institutions, especially studies and analyzes of EU regional policy.

Wolfgang Streitenberger has been a Rotarian since 1995 (president of a Rotary club in 2007/2008).

  • 2003: Great Golden Decoration with the Star for Services to the Republic of Austria
  • December 2015: Awarding of the professional title “Professor” by the Austrian Federal President or the Minister of Education for services to informing the professional world and the public through lectures and publications as well as teaching about the European Union and its policies and institutions.
