Wolfgang Widmaier

Wolfgang Widmaier (born November 2, 1926 in Sigmaringen ; † April 13, 2013 there ) was a German university professor and composer . 1972–1984 he worked as prorector and rector of the Karlsruhe University of Music .

Life

Wolfgang Widmaier was the youngest son of the teacher and writer Karl Widmaier and the piano teacher Elisabeth Widmaier geb. Buchholz, who worked as an independent French teacher after the early death of her husband. Widmaier grew up in Hechingen and Sigmaringen, where he attended elementary school and high school. His most important mentors, also in the musical field, were Father Hariolf Ettensperger from the Beuron Monastery and the religion teacher Hubert von Lassaulx. After military service and being wounded, he passed the Abitur in Sigmaringen in 1946, the state examination for artistic teaching at grammar schools and the state examination in musicology in Freiburg in 1950 and 1953 . In 1955 he married Brigitte Widmaier geb. Schipke. In 1985 his wife and the eldest of three sons died by a murder victim . In 1990 he married Elisabeth Widmaier geb. Hurler and moved back to Sigmaringen.

Act

1953–1967, Widmaier taught music theory, musicological and music pedagogical subjects at the Academy for Music in Darmstadt. 1967–1974 he was a lecturer, 1974–1993 professor of music theory and analysis at the Karlsruhe University of Music . He headed the School Music and Catholic Church Music departments and acted as a liaison professor for the students and a member of the Senate. 1972–1980 he was Vice Rector, 1980–1984 as Rector. The reconstruction of Gottesaue Castle began during his term of office . In addition, there were activities as a choir director, organist and high school teacher. In 1985 he was honored with the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon, and in 1987 with the Golden Badge of Honor of the Cecilia Association .

Some of Widmaier's choral compositions have appeared in Freiburg, Mainz, Rodenkirchen and Paderborn. The text publications include around 1000 articles, mainly concert reports in daily newspapers. The discussion of three lectures by John Cage for the Darmstädter Echo is documented in the series Music Concepts . Shortly before his death, Wolfgang Widmaier was able to present his childhood and youth memories Spiel und Ernst in the Sigmaringen State Archives .
