Wolfgang Wieland (born June 29, 1933 in Heidenheim an der Brenz ; † March 8, 2015 in Göttingen ) was a German philosopher and doctor . He is considered one of the most important philosophers of his generation.

Life

Wieland received his doctorate in 1955 in Heidelberg under Hans-Georg Gadamer with a thesis on Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schelling . The habilitation followed in 1960. From 1960 he was associate professor at the University of Hamburg . Wieland then followed appointments as professor of philosophy in Marburg (1964–1968), Göttingen (1968–1979) and Freiburg im Breisgau (1979–1983). From 1983 until his retirement in 1998 he was Professor of Theoretical Philosophy at the University of Heidelberg .

Positions

Coming from the school of Gadamer - influenced even more by the skeptical attitude of Karl Löwith - Wieland takes the subject of investigation in his habilitation thesis Aristotelian Physics . His investigation, which combines phenomenological and language-analytical perspectives, has become a classic of Aristotle research, published in several editions . After numerous seminal essays on Aristotelian syllogistics, a groundbreaking study on Plato's philosophy followed in 1982 . It is Wieland's merit to show the philosophical dimension of the form of dialogue as an expression of the importance that Plato attaches to forms of non-propositional knowledge such as human skills and dispositions.

The performance of judgment is another research focus of Wieland. As a human medicine practitioner, he has questioned these in numerous publications such as Praxis and Judgment or Diagnosis: Thoughts on medical theory in the field of medical practice. In another great monograph, he turns to Kant's theory of judgment with judgment and feeling .

Wieland's work has had a broad international impact to this day. Wieland was a member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences ; In 2005 the Medical Faculty of the University of Tübingen awarded him an honorary doctorate.
