Wolfgang Wischmeyer

Wolfgang Wischmeyer (born October 5, 1944 in Kassel ) is a German Protestant theologian . From 1996 to 2013 he was professor for church history , Christian archeology and church art at the Evangelical Theological Faculty of the University of Vienna .

Life

Wolfgang Wischmeyer studied art history , classical and Christian archeology as well as Protestant theology in Freiburg , Göttingen and Heidelberg , where he received his doctorate in 1973 with the work The archaeological and literary sources on the church history of Apulia et Calabria, Lucania et Bruttii . In 1977 he completed his habilitation in Heidelberg with the text Studies on Sarcophagus Lids . In 1992 he was appointed adjunct professor in Heidelberg. After working as a pastor of the Evangelical Church in Württemberg, he was full professor at the University of Vienna since 1996. He retired in 2013 .

In 1997 Wolfgang Wischmeyer became a member of the Church Fathers Commission of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and in 1999 chairman of the Southeast Central European Faculty Conference. He is a member of the Synod of the Evangelical Church HB and a member of the Theological Committee of the Evangelical Church A. and HB in Austria

In 2017 Wolfgang Wischmeyer received the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art, 1st class .

Wolfgang Wischmeyer's research areas are ancient Christianity and the old church . The main focus of publications and work is the Greek and Latin epigraphy of late antiquity , the acts of martyrs , ancient calendars (especially the chronograph from 354 - the so-called calendar of Filocalus ), the role of magic in ancient Christianity and early Christian iconography .
