Wolfratshauser breakfast

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wolfratshauser Breakfast is a meeting between the federal chairman of the CDU , Angela Merkel , and the then Bavarian Prime Minister and CSU chairman Edmund Stoiber , which took place on Friday, January 11, 2002 in Wolfratshausen in the Stoibers house.

The reason for the meeting was the upcoming decision as to which of the two should run as candidate for Chancellor of the Union parties for the 2002 Bundestag election campaign ("K question"). Merkel had signaled her interest in running for office in the summer of 2001 ("I have very clear ideas about how I, as Chancellor in this country, could do a lot better together with others.")

After the retreat of the CSU regional group, the then regional group leader Michael Glos Stoiber proclaimed a candidate for chancellor of the CSU on January 8, 2002.

Merkel left the candidacy for Chancellor to Stoiber .

After the Bundestag election in 2002 , which was just lost for the Union , Merkel replaced her long-term rival Friedrich Merz as chairman of the CDU / CSU parliamentary group and thus rose to become the leader of the opposition . Merkel was nominated in 2005 as a candidate for chancellor for the early federal elections in 2005 .

The situation was similar to that before the federal election in 1980 , when Helmut Kohl left the CDU / CSU candidate for Chancellor Franz Josef Strauss . Strauss lost the election and Kohl became Federal Chancellor in 1982 through the vote of no confidence in Helmut Schmidt .
