In the village, which was first mentioned in writing in 1684, the large landowner Miklaschewskyj established a porcelain factory in the first half of the 19th century . The raw materials required were supplied from local quarries. At the end of 1825, the Decembrist Alexander Friedrich von der Brüggen was arrested in the village .

In the village there is the former manor house of Miklaschewskyj from the 19th century. Another attraction in the village is the Moorish-style Golden Gate , an architectural monument of national importance, which leads to the estate of the landowner Miklaschewskyj .

Wolokytyne was until 2018 the administrative center of the eponymous district municipality in the northwest of Rajon Putyvl to which even the villages Kotscherhy ( Кочерги , ) with about 330 inhabitants, Kubarewo ( Кубарево , ) with about 80 inhabitants and Schtscherbyniwka ( Щербинівка , ) with about 150 inhabitants belonged. The village is located at an altitude of 158  m on the right bank of the 50 km long Esman ( Есмань ) at the confluence with the Klewen ( Клевень ), a 113 km long right tributary of the Seim .
