Women20 (abbreviation W20 , German "Frauen20") is - based on the "G20", the " group of the twenty most important industrial and emerging countries " - "one of the most recent G20 dialogue processes" with the main goal of strengthening women economically and gender equality at the center of the G20.

According to its own statement, the main goal of W20 is "to make the economic empowerment of women an integral part of the G20 processes". "In a broad dialogue, the W20 joins the global experience of female-led civil society organizations and female entrepreneurial associations in order to make strong recommendations in the context of the G20 negotiations."

In 2017, under the German presidency of the W20, four main topics were set:

  • Inclusion in the labor market: increasing the participation of women in the labor market and the importance of jobs traditionally carried out by women
  • Financial inclusion: promoting female entrepreneurship and access to capital for women
  • Digital inclusion: bridging the gender gap in digital
  • Strengthening the W20: Gender equality and the economic empowerment of women at the center of the G20 processes

Dialogue process

During the German G20 presidency in 2017, the German Women's Council and the Association of German Women Entrepreneurs (VdU) were commissioned by the federal government to organize the Women20 dialogue process.

W20 summit

In October 2015, under the Turkish G20 presidency, a first working meeting of the W20 took place in Antalya : "There, demands and measures were formulated to promote the economic participation of women in the G20 member states and to strengthen their economic power." G20 presidency were further taken up by the subsequent Chinese, this was on the W20 summit ( "W20 summit") in 2016 also a final declaration ( W20- Communique created) and the G20 summit in Hangzhou in 2016 passed to the G20.

Discussion in Berlin 2017

In the run-up to the G20 summit in Hamburg 2017 as part of the German G20 presidency on July 7th and 8th 2017 in Hamburg , another W20 summit took place on April 25th and 26th in the hotel to conclude the “W20 dialogue process 2017” InterContinental took place in Berlin . Its motto was "Diverse, resilient, sustainable - Stabilizing the economy and society - By strengthening the role of women". The German Women's Council and the Association of German Women Entrepreneurs (VdU) were commissioned by the Federal Government to organize this dialogue process; the Women Political Leaders Global Forum (WPL) attended the summit.

Among others, Stephanie Bschorr , President of the VdU, Chrystia Freeland , Canadian Foreign Minister, Christine Lagarde , Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Queen Máxima of the Netherlands and, at the invitation of Angela Merkel, Ivanka Trump , daughter and one of the main advisers to the incumbent US President Donald Trump were among the participants. A panel discussion on April 25th was moderated by Miriam Meckel . Various " round tables " that took place in spring 2017 have prepared the content for a corresponding W20 communiqué, which will be presented to the incumbent G20 President, German Chancellor Angela Merkel . At the same time, a network of representatives from women's associations and entrepreneurs of the G20 states established.

At the end of the summit, the list of demands was presented to Merkel: In addition to the “25 by 25” target (increase in the women's employment rate by 25 percent by 2025), the communiqué also calls for more support for women as entrepreneurs and systematic consideration of gender equality in the G20 policy.

Subsequently, responsibility was handed over to the representatives of Argentina , which assumed the chairmanship of the G20 in 2018.
