Woodlark , also known as Muyua , Muyuw or Murua , is an island east of the island of New Guinea .

geography

Woodlark is 739  km² in size and, together with its minor islands, forms the Murua Local Level Government Area of the Samarai-Murua District of the Milne Bay Province of Papua New Guinea , which also includes the Alcester Islands in the south and the Marshall Bennett Islands in the southwest. The highest point is 410 meters Suloga Peak on a small peninsula in the south. Woodlark is the main island of the Woodlark Islands , which includes over 20 islands.

As of the 2000 census, the main island had a population of 3,151 in 14 villages and a separate facility. The largest villages were Wabununa (469) and Guasopa (358, with the island's only airstrip) in the southeast, and Kaurai (317) on the north coast. There are also three further villages on the offshore island Madau to the west : Madau (307), Muneiveyova (273) and Boagis (178), and one on the offshore island of Mapas (104):  Map with all coordinates: OSM | WikiMap

The language spoken on the island is called Muyuw .

history

Under the name Operation Chronicle , the Allied forces landed on Woodlark Island and Kiriwina on June 30, 1943 . A small Japanese occupying power was quickly defeated, and sporadic air attacks only resulted in minor losses. A few months after landing, Navy Seabees had built a large military airfield in Guasopa Bay, known as Woodlark Airfield (later Guasopa Airport).
