Woody McBride (* 1967 in Bismarck , North Dakota ) is an American musician , producer and DJ from the techno and acid techno sectors. He publishes under his real name and numerous pseudonyms such as 4D , Bird Man , DJ ESP , Earthworm , Pleasure or Voltage 9 .

Life

McBride came to Minneapolis to study in 1988 , where he first gained a foothold in the house scene and got Kevin Cole , the founder of the House Nation label , as a mentor. McBride then worked as a DJ in its opening act and also designed its flyer. After a short time, however, he turned away from Cole and the established club scene and turned to the nascent techno scene, which at that time was still going on apart from the commercial clubs. He also worked as a promoter and organizer early on. As a DJ, he called himself DJ ESP , inspired by the track ESP from the house project Deee-Lite , which was released in 1990, but soon appeared under his real name to express his range of activities beyond pure DJing. From the early 1990s onwards, his own publications appeared. In 1993 he founded the label Communique Music based in Lindstrom , Maine , on which he initially published his own music, but later also pieces by other artists. In particular, his maxi publication Basketball Heroes from 1996, which was later reissued several times, established the label's significant reputation, which soon split into several sub-labels.

In 2003 McBride operated eleven labels with a total of over 160 publications. His own publications appeared a. a. also on the labels White Noise (by Dave Clarke ), Ovum (by Josh Wink ), Bush (by Eric Powell ), Synewave (by Damon Wild ) and Skint (by Fatboy Slim ). As of 2013, his oeuvre comprised over 50 maxisisingles and EPs as well as various albums. Woody McBride's tracks can be found on a total of around 50 compilations, and several dozen of his remixes of tracks by other artists have been published. He has already played at almost all major techno festivals such as Mayday or Nature One . In the years after 2008, he largely withdrew from the public eye in order to devote himself to his family with two sons, and since 2011 he has been appearing again more and more.
