Woomy Schmidt

Wolfgang Michael Schmidt (born June 28, 1945 in Essen ; † before May 26, 2018 in Baden-Baden ) was a German journalist , publicist and radio and TV presenter.

Life

From 1965 Schmidt volunteered at the Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung in Essen. In 1966 he was the first daily newspaper journalist to report on the Beatles' upcoming tour of Germany . In 1967 he switched to the Neue Ruhr Zeitung . In 1968 he took over the music editing of the magazine Schallplatte . In 1970 he became head of the press office of the Intercord Tongesellschaft in Stuttgart. In 1978 he co-founded AUDIO magazine . Initially, he was head of the music editorial department, later managing editor. In 1983 he moved to SWF3 in Baden-Baden. There he worked as a music critic, moderator of SWF3 Funkboutique , SWF3 Radioclub , SWF3 Music Hall and other broadcasts. In 1998 he switched to SWR television and took over the SWR jazz editorial team as a presenter of the regular TV program Jazz Masters , editor and presenter of the 24-hour 3sat program Concerto Massimo - All That Jazz New Year's Eve / New Year 2000/2001 and Music expert on the TV show coffee or tea .

Schmidt worked as a jazz journalist and made TV documentaries, including one about the jazz pianist Monty Alexander , which won an award at the Venice TV Festival in 2002. He founded and directed the SWF / SWR Jazz Festival in Europa-Park Rust near Freiburg for ten years . Wolfgang Michael Schmidt was married and lived near Baden-Baden and in Florida. He died in Baden-Baden in 2018.

In addition to his career as a journalist and moderator, Woomy Schmidt worked as a record producer for the direct-editing label Jeton, founded by Klaus Heiligenstühler in 1980, and was responsible as a producer for the Knock Out of drummer Charly Antolini . Schmidt produced records with bassist Ray Brown , saxophonist Johnny Griffin and pianist Monty Alexander. In Europe he produced Chris Barber and Mr. Acker Bilk, among others . He also worked with the songwriters Reinhard Mey , André Heller and Georg Kreisler . He produced the latter's two Everblacks albums. Another artist he worked with was the writer and cabaret artist Hanns Dieter Hüsch . With Dieter Hallervorden he produced his first album With the Face .

Publications

In addition to Pop-Lexika (1975) and several musician biographies, Woomy Schmidt wrote the Ruhr area novel Beat , which was published in 2000 by Rütten & Löning / Aufbau Verlag Berlin . In 2004 the novel was reissued under the name Girls Girls Girls by Heyne Verlag .

Most recently, Schmidt worked as a television director in the field of music and as a publicist. Directorial work includes Randy Newman , Herbie Hancock , Joe Jackson and Annie Ross , among others .
