Workin 'with the Miles Davis Quintet is a jazz album by Miles Davis , recorded on May 11 and October 26, 1956 for Prestige Records .

background

In order to end his contract with Prestige prematurely and to switch to Columbia on more lucrative terms, Miles Davis had to record four more albums for Prestige. He took this up in two “studio marathons” in May and October 1956, recording a total of 24 titles. Standards from composers such as Dave Brubeck , Ahmad Jamal , Richard Rodgers and John Coltrane and other composers were released on the album.

reception

Lindsay Planer rated the album on Allmusic as follows:

“Armed with some staggering original compositions, pop standards, show tunes, and the occasional jazz cover, Workin 'is the quintessence of group participation. Davis, as well as Coltrane, actually contributes compositions as well as mesmerizing performances to the album. The band's interaction on "Four" extends the assertion that suggests this quintet plays with the consistency of a single, albeit ten-armed, musician. "

“Equipped with some amazing original compositions, pop standards, show melodies and occasional jazz covers, Workin 'is the epitome of group work. Davis, like Coltrane, does indeed contribute to the album with compositions and fascinating performances. The teamwork of the band on "Four" underpins the claim that this quintet plays with the consistency of a single, albeit ten-armed, musician. "
