The World Wind Energy Association ( WWEA ) is an international umbrella organization for the promotion of wind energy . The WWEA was founded in 2001 and is based in Bonn . In August 2014, the WWEA had 600 direct member organizations from a total of 104 countries, including wind energy associations at national level, scientific research institutions and companies from the wind energy industry.

In 2007, the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations accredited the WWEA as a non-governmental organization with special consultative status . The WWEA thus obtained the right to participate in international conferences organized by the UN with regard to renewable energies and can request a hearing when developing guidelines.

Conferences and publications

The WWEA holds an annual scientific conference with an accompanying trade fair, the World Wind Energy Conference (WWEC). Proceedings are published by the WWEA.

  • WWEC 2014 took place from 7.-9. April 2014 in Shanghai with the main theme "Distributed Generation: Matching supply and demand".
  • WWEC 2013 took place from 3rd to 5th June 2013 in Havana , Cuba with the main theme "Opening Doors to Caribbean Winds".
  • WWEC 2012 took place from 3rd to 5th July 2012 in Bonn with the main theme "Community Power - Citizens' Power".
  • WWEC 2011 took place from October 31 to November 2, 2011 in Cairo with the main theme "Greening Energy: Converting Deserts into Powerhouses".
  • WWEC 2010 took place in Istanbul .
  • WWEC 2009 took place on the South Korean island of Jeju-do .
  • WWEC 2008 was the 7th conference and took place in Kingston, Ontario, Canada.
  • WWEC 2007 was the 6th conference, held in Argentina and had 600 participants.
  • WWEC 2006 was the 5th conference and took place in New Delhi .
  • WWEC 2005 was the 4th conference, held in Melbourne .
  • WWEC 2004 was the 3rd conference, took place in Beijing , and with more than 2,000 participants it was the largest wind power conference outside of Europe and North America to date.
  • WWEC 2003 was the 2nd conference that took place in Cape Town .
  • WWEC 2002 was the 1st conference that took place in Berlin .

The WWEA has been issuing the biennial series of publications Wind energy international since 2005 .
