Why a FILM about THESE PEOPLE? is a documentary from the GDR Academy for Film and Television by Thomas Heise from 1980.

action

Berndt and Norbert Weber sit with their mother at the coffee table in their apartment in Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg and look at a photo album with pictures of children. The mother, who has been divorced since 1962 and has lived alone with the children since then, proudly tells us that she always wanted the best for her, but that they didn't react. She is of the opinion that they are not their nature, but that of the father, because if the father is no good, the sons are no good either. In the course of the conversation, the two boys argue about when they first appeared with criminal acts. They agree that there were several department store burglaries in October 1976, but they are again divided on the details.

After their excursion to a square next to the Prenzlauer Berg water tower , where they enthusiastically talk about their experiences there with drinking bouts and fights, the camera follows them to their local pub . Here they talk to a drinking buddy about which records of western production they own. Back home at the coffee table, they say that the band Kiss is one of their favorite groups and proudly show several posters . Next comes the story of two air rifles they bought just before a vacation. After only shooting in the basement at first, it didn't take long before they shot pigeons from the yard and then fought real fights with other young people. In this context, they were reported and sentenced to imprisonment after a trial. The next trial was held on February 5, 1980 before the District Court of Prenzlauer Berg for unauthorized vehicle usage rather than because they have stolen a motorcycle drunk and drove with it through Berlin.

When Thomas Heises asked what the brothers' vision of their future would be, he got the answer: None, we have to see what's coming and let us be surprised. We just have to take it as it is.

Production and publication

Why a FILM about THESE PEOPLE? This statement by a lecturer was decisive for the title and its idiosyncratic spelling in the opening credits of the only film completed by Thomas Heisig, at the GDR University of Film and Television . It was a journalistic and documentary film exercise in the second year of study in 1980 and was immediately banned from public screenings until it had its world premiere on September 20, 1989 at the Academy of the Arts in the GDR .

A re-performance took place on July 1, 2018 in the series: Berlin.Dokument Nr. 79: Berlin - East Berlin: Young hooligans and petty criminals in the Berlin Zeughauskino .
