The Wurzeralm is a high alpine pasture in Upper Austria in the south-western part of the municipality of Spital am Pyhrn . It is located at an average of 1,400 m above sea level. The total area is 275 hectares, 96 hectares of which are pastures.

It is accessed by the Wurzeralmbahn funicular, which was built in 1978 and later rebuilt, and is used for tourism in both summer and winter. Around the mountain station of the funicular there are two chairlifts and a few tow lifts . The Wurzeralm youth center of Upper Austria and the Linzer Haus , an alpine club hut, are also close to the cable car . The marketing takes place today together with the Hinterstoder area as HiWu . A trail for downhill mountain biking was set up along the route of the funicular .

The area between Warscheneck in the west and Stubwieswipfel in the east is designated as a nature reserve or landscape protection area Warscheneck-Süd-Wurzeralm ( Upper Austria lsg08 ) and covers 257.59 hectares.

geology

The 250 m vertically sloping south-west face of the Stubwieswipfel

The mountains Warscheneck and Toter Mann in the west consist of about 200 million years old Dachstein limestone , the Stubwieswipfel in the east of younger, about 140 million year old Plassen limestone . The bottom of the pond is located in a large dolphin ( polje ), where soft rocks such as slate and gypsum predominate. The glaciers, coming down from the Brunnsteinerkar, which dug out this hollow and filled it with moraine debris, left behind a meltwater lake 9,000 years ago, which was additionally sealed by layers of Werfen. This began to silt up about 5,000 years ago and heavily marshland areas developed.

The Teichl rises in the Brunnsteinersee in the west , which does not flow off superficially here, but only reappears at the Filzmösern. It meanders through the Teichlboden in order to disappear again in the so-called Teichlschwind in the Karst. In the Rollende Lueg cave you can still hear the creek flowing deep underground. In the vicinity of the valley station of the funicular, it finally comes to light in the Großquelle Teichlursprung.

Colored water showed that a part appears again in the pond's origin, but also in many other sources, which is explained by a network of crevices, crevices and gullies in the karstified limestone.

flora

Blooming alpine chives on the Wurzeralm

The Wurzeralm is characterized by a large variety of biotopes ( wet meadows , bog areas , dwarf shrub heath , coniferous forest and alpine pasture) and particularly diverse vegetation.

The Lower and Upper Filzmoos are two high mountain pine bogs, which are considered the highest in the Northern Alps. The share of mountain pines ( Pinus mugo ) is around 50 percent, the remainder is used by Kleinseggenried. Helmut Gams therefore counted them among the most valuable in the entire Eastern Alpine region. Rushes ( Trichophorum cespitosum ), mud sedge ( Carex limosa ), common cranberries ( Vaccinium oxycoccos ), rushes ( Scheuchzeria palustris ), sedge ( Carex pauciflora ) with few flowers thrive here . Also rare mosses like Sphagnum compactum , Cinclidium stygium and Calliergon trifarium .

Also noteworthy is the abundance of alpine chives ( Allium schoenoprasum ssp. Sibiricum ), which bloom at the end of July , the characteristic plant of the wet pastures in this area. This was mentioned as early as 1832 as “streams enclosed in rose garlands”. One month earlier, the same areas of the globe flower ( Trollius europaeus ) and aconite buttercup ( Ranunculus aconitifolius ) bloom in large stands.

The Teichlboden is surrounded by a larch-spruce forest that characterizes the landscape. The larch populations were created by cutting the shade tree species and using them as pasture. The ciliated alpine rose ( Rhododendron hirsutum ) thrives in the undergrowth here .

fauna

The Brunnsteinersee is of particular importance for amphibians . Many common frogs ( Rana temporaria ) gather here for mating and spawning . Since the lake is often covered with snow masses from avalanches for a long time, the eggs are only laid in July, which means that the tadpoles often no longer metamorphose in the same year , but have to spend the winter in the water. Next are Alpine Newt ( Triturus alpestris ) and in the area of terrestrial living Alpine salamander ( Salamandra atra common nowadays).

Historical

In 1950, rock carvings with human and animal-shaped motifs were discovered in the In der Höll area , dating from the Middle Ages at the earliest .
