The X-79 close to the wind

The X-79 is a keel yacht . She is considered the forerunner of modern sports boats and is largely responsible for the success of the shipyard that later became known as X-Yachts . The shipyard is still considered a good address for sporty yachts to this day. The yacht was designed by Niels Jeppesen . It was built 468 times between 1979 and 1994.

description

The X-79 was uncompromisingly designed for speed and good surfing properties, a rather unusual concept at the time of development in 1979. The stern of the boat is relatively wide and flat, a design that only became widespread for fast yachts 20 years later. The 7/8 rig was equipped with all imaginable trim devices for sporty sailing and is driven with backstays . The calculated sails load rating of over 5.3 requires reefing in good time in order to avoid a sun shot due to excessive heeling .

In order to build a fast sailing ship, as much weight as possible had to be saved. Both the hull and the deck were made of GRP sandwich laminate. The laminated interior construction provides additional rigidity. The bolted keel is made of cast iron. The mast with a pair of spreaders is put through the deck and is in the bilge . The deck layout complies with the standards of the time, with all traps and straighteners ending in a large battery of stoppers in the middle of the cabin roof.

The expansion is comparatively spartan, but for a boat primarily intended for regatta, that's not surprising either. In the standard configuration there are four bunks on the saloon benches and two dog bunks under the cockpit. The armrests of the salon benches can also be folded up to form two pilot berths. The double berth in the forecastle was available as an option, so there was no fore hatch from the shipyard. A chemical toilet was optionally available in the bow. The galley is located in the open passage to the forecastle on the port side.

A small outboard motor is usually used as a slack slide .

Remarks

  1. The X-79 was delivered without a guard rail, which has since been retrofitted on many ships. This increases the yardstick count to 101
